Snickers are gluten free!

I can't believe I didn't know this!

After they changed the Mars Bar recipe and added tonnes of barley malt, making it unsuitable for coeliacs, I naturally assumed that snickers were not suitable any more either. After all surely Snickers are just Mars with some peanuts??

Anyway someone on the GF Message Board asked if they were gluten free and I decided to find out.

I went to the snickers website. Unfortunately I can't link straight to the ingredients list because its in a flash player format. But if you click on "products" on the top of the billboard you can view ingredients. It all looks fine!

Guess what I'm off to buy tomorrow ;-)

Almondy Gluten Free Cheesecake

Almondy are a Swedish Company who make gluten free tarts and cheesecakes. I had heard good things about them so during a recent visit to Ikea I decided to buy some of their Daim Tart.

They have a very strange texture but I really like them. They are nice and sweet and a cross between cake and wafer!

When I was in Reading we visited Dunelm Mill at the Savacentre retail park. The cafe there had Almondy Tart as a gluten free option. It was out on a tray and fairly close to the other cakes but the staff knew to use separate servers and I was fine after it.

It seems the idea of having a gluten free option is finally spreading.

I love Waitrose!

Having recently been ill, I took a week off Uni to relax with my parents and grandparents. My grandparents live in a lovely little hamlet in the middle of the Berkshire Downs. As this was an impromptu visit I had little in the way of GF food to take with me. So the second day required a trip to Wallingford, to Waitrose.

I wandered around the shop picking up some basics - eggs, bananas, potatoes, etc. I then went to the bread section to find the Antoinette Savill Rolls. Beyond the bakery section was the cleaning section so I assumed this store did not have a specific Free From section. I was in for a shock!

There was half an aisle of gluten free food including several brands I had never seen before. I was so impressed and spoilt for choice. If only the Waitrose in Birmingham would follow suit. I think an email to the manager is needed.

So well done Waitrose!

Referral at last!

I went to my GP this morning as I am continuing to lose weight. My BMI is now very low and my energy levels are suffering for it. I saw a different doctor and she immediately referred me to a gastroenterologist. I now have an appointment for the 3rd March for further investigations. For once I think I'm getting somewhere!

Marks and Spencer Cafe, Bolton

I went into Bolton town centre today for an afternoon of girly shopping with my mum and elder sister.

I am recovering from a nasty bug and its the first day I've been well enough to go out this week. After a couple of hours shopping I was exhausted (that sister of mine can shop!) and someone suggested a cup of tea. Sounded like a great idea to me!

My only request was that we went somewhere where I could get GF cake. I suggested M&S as I had heard good reports. Bolton M&S has just had a makeover and a lovely new cafe on the 3rd floor. From the size of it I was sure they must have their GF cakes here. But when I looked at the packaged cakes I could see nothing gluten free. So I asked a member of staff. She wasn't sure and went to find someone else, who said,

"Gluten free cakes? Yes I put two different kinds out there earlier!"

I was shocked! Not only was there GF cake, there was a choice of GF cake!!
Although the fruit cake slice was tempting, the double chocolate muffin looked irresistible. And it was amazing! In fact I kept looking at the pack to check it was actually gluten free!

What struck me about these cakes is that they weren't obviously labeled as gluten free at first glance and other non-coeliacs were choosing to eat them!!

Impressed doesn't cover how I felt!

The cafe also has a stylish new look as you can see from the picture.

Then of course on the way out there was a cheeky diversion through the food court to get some Coconut Macaroons to bring home.

Well...I have some calories to make up after my bug this week!
